When the new year hits, so many of us want to start with a “clean slate”. If there was something difficult in the years prior, we want it gone, so that we can start anew.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t often happen. Some wounds or trauma don’t just go away because the year goes away.
The good news is that God can and deeply desires to help us move forward. Satan wants you to hang on to the past, but God wants you to move forward.
Hebrews 12:1-2 says, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."
So how do we do that?
Well, it certainly doesn’t mean you forget what was done, and it certainly doesn’t mean it didn’t matter, and it certainly doesn’t mean that it didn’t hurt.
What it does mean is that you acknowledge that it has been a stronghold in your life and you are unwilling for it have that power over you any longer. As a matter of fact, the word “stronghold” means “anything that has a stronger hold on you than God does”.
So, we surrender that thing to God, a million times a day if need be. We acknowledge that it is better in His hands than in ours. We ask God to heal our hearts and remove any lies that wormed their way into our souls about who we are. We press into Him to restore our true identity in Him. We may need a Christian counselor or life coach to help us navigate all the emotions we feel and what to do with them, or we may need a Christian community of women to come around us and help us heal. Do what you sense you need to do. Or do it ALL. I did.
At some point, if you want a fresh start to a new year, we have to stop looking at the person who hurt us and start looking to the One who can heal us.
Stop looking at the person who hurt you and start looking to the One who can heal you.
It’s time to stop looking back; because looking back, holds you back. Start focusing on the future; because if you are sucking in air, you are here for a reason and your future with Jesus this next year is going to be amazing!!!
You are loved,
Jena
