Teshuvah and Yom Kippur

I hope you were able to go into my personal Facebook page and watch my new year address! I am so so excited about our new year ahead and diving deep into the Bible! We SO need to get back to our Bibles!!!

Following Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, there are 10 days prior to Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement. Those 10 days are called Teshuvah or 10 Days of Awe.

The word Teshuvah means “repentance” or “returning”. It is an opportunity for you to repent of your sin against God and man, and to return to the Lord.

There are three parts to Teshuvah:

1) confession: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

1 John 1:9

2) Godly sorrow: “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.”

2 Corinthians 7:10

3)vow not to repeat the misdeed: I like this one, but unfortunately, many Christians do not follow this one. Grace has been used as a license to live however people want to that true repentance and turning away from that sin very rarely happens.

So turn away from your sins. Turn to God. Then your sins will be wiped away. The time will come when the Lord will make everything new" Acts 3:19

Take the time to ask Holy Spirit if there is anything that He wants to reveal to you that you need to repent of. Then, take some time to declare your returning to the Lord.

"Return to me, and I will return to you," says the LORD Almighty.” Malachi 3:7

Then, comes what we celebrate today: Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, for the Jewish people. Many of them are still looking for their Messiah, and continue to make animal sacrifices.

Yet today, while the Jewish people celebrate Yom Kippur, we can celebrate the fact that Christ Jesus was sent by the Father to make a one time for all time sacrifice for our sins! No more yearly sacrifices! No more looking for the Messiah! He has come, and His name is Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God! He came to make atonement for our sin so that we could be united again with God!

Hallelujah! What a Savior!!!
